13 Superstitions A Real Estate Agent Can Learn To Overcome

Every once in awhile, as a real estate agent you’ll run across clients who hold strong superstitions about a house or its features. Could be about mirrors, could be about ladders, could be about knocking on wood for good luck, or could be something you’ve never heard of. Whatever your clients’ belief, it’s important that you overcome that objection with poise and confidence. Here are 13 home-related superstitions to know so you can practice overcoming them.

While some of these superstitions might seem kooky, every real estate agent needs to know how to overcome any objection that might arise.

Superstition: If you bring an old broom into a new house, you’ll also bring all of your bad luck with it.

Ok, so a real estate agent might not be involved with the everyday household cleaning for their clients and homebuyers, but it’s important to know how to have a conversation with your clients about these kinds of things. Their superstition may even be about something already in the house they’re buying.

shoes

Superstition: Putting shoes on a table in your home might bring bad luck.

Even more-so, as a real estate agent you may come across clients who think its bad luck to wear shoes inside a house at all. Ask the right questions ahead of time to make sure you don’t “step on anyones toes”, so to speak.

Umbrella

Superstition: Never open an umbrella inside.

Other than risking knocking something over or dinging up the walls, some believe that opening an umbrella inside will cause bad luck to “rain down on them”. Probably best to avoid doing this altogether!

Hammer and nail

Superstition: Never pound a nail after sunset, or you’ll wake the tree gods.

Ok, so this one seems pretty self explanatory. If the threat of disturbing the gods isn’t enough to stop you, then the sanity of your household and neighbors can be!

Superstition: Acorns will protect your home for lightning.

Who wouldn’t want that anyway? Even if you don’t believe in this one yourself, Acorns can be a nice decorative touch for a real estate agent to use for their homes when staging.

vintage bell

Superstition: Bells scare away hardships.

Bells come in all shapes and sizes. Again, this is another decorative item you can keep in your model homes. After all, as a real estate agent you never know when you’ll have a client who has these superstitions in mind.

Number 8

Superstition: Houses with the number “8” in their listing price are thought to bring good luck.

While this one might not be a “selling point”, it is something you can store in your back pocket as a real estate agent to remember for when you have superstitious clients. Plus, maybe it will be that last piece to nudge your clients off the fence and into purchasing.

Glass vases

Superstition: It causes bad luck to knock a vase off a mantle.

Avoid the bad luck and the mess at your homes you’re showing by not knocking any vases off of shelves and mantles in your homes. Seems like a win win whether you’re superstitious or not!

black ant

Superstition: If black ants are in your home, you will come into great wealth.

Ok, you might not want to advertise this to your clients if there are actually black ants in the homes you sell as a real estate agent. However, if you see them, it just might mean good luck for you!

young couple in bed

Superstition: A bed should head toward the north.

Remember this one when you are staging your homes. It might not always work to face the beds this way, but adding that touch will be noticed by some.

curved road

Superstition: Properties that sit on curved roads or facing a ‘T’ intersection will invite bad fortune.

A real estate agent might find themselves needing to spend extra attention on these types of properties to make them move. If not for the bad fortune, maybe it’s because of the placement of the home.

garden hoe

Superstition: Never bring a garden hoe into a home.

If you do end up doing this, make sure you walk backward through the same door you came into so the bad luck will be undone. But, lets me real, there’s no need to use a garden hoe to stage your homes.

Coins

Superstition: Scatter coins around the living room in a new home to invite financial prosperity.

This is a long standing superstition that, as a real estate agent, you can let your clients know about this one. This is a fun, harmless tradition that you can make a regular with your clients.

Many superstitions that will come up might seem hard to believe, but many people have life experiences that shape the things they believe.
